your own fingers on your face by Woodswolf

inspired by The Mask-Maker by @unironicallycringe

As soon as the lens is hidden, the knight collapses forward against the wall. He shakes ferociously, holding his face in his own trembling fingers and sobbing like a child — and the demon lord can’t find anything in himself to fault him for it.

A thousand years of waiting can do things to a person that they would never expect.

A few years of watching can, too.

.......why is tumblr desktop laid out like twitter now.

merrilark

ah.

  • the font on the dropdown menus on the left are hard to read and eye-strainy
  • clicking "activity" gives you a dropdown menu first instead of taking you to the actual page
  • tag search seems slower...? (could be my bad internet though)
  • it's honestly less "comfortable" imo to navigate when everything isn't naturally on the upper right
  • oh this is so cluttered. i miss having empty blue space on the left; this feels... loud and annoying.
  • if i wanted to use twitter or facebook, i would use twitter or facebook. but i'm using tumblr.

tumblr, i've complained a lot about many of your changes over the years, but blatantly reskinning yourself as twitter is maybe the worst ones right next to the beta editor.

why are we changing for the new users? this website isn't hard to learn. it's charm lies in not being like every other social media website.

merrilark

for those lucky enough to have not been hit by the update yet, this is what i'm talking about:

image

opened the settings dropdown menu so you can see the font. now, admittedly, some things on the right like the tag replacer and tag tracking have been added with xkit, but the main issue is everything going on on the left.

again, it's not a big deal. i will inevitably get used to it just like i got used to the beta editor even though i also still hate the beta editor for making it harder to format anything, but it really makes me raise my brows that tumblr is leaning harder into looking like other social media.

i genuinely don't know what to do in this situation. leave staff feedback and low reviews on the app store? throw some money at them in case it's a money issue and they're doing this because they're dying against the competition?

kind of wish staff would be open and transparent with us about why they're making these changes so we know how to better support them so they don't have to do this. because even though tumblr says they're not going to force algorithms on us or change the chronological dash, the gradual morph into looking and behaving like other social media does not instill me with a lot of confidence.

anyway, i don't wanna clog anyone's dash with too much negativity on what is ultimately a small matter. i just gotta grimace and get the unease for tumblr's future out of my system. sad as it is to say, this is one of the very few places that i can still find some scrap of serotonin and i hate thinking about it eventually becoming unusable for the things i like using it for. never mind the fact that it's still arguably the best place for creatives to share their work. once tumblr isn't that anymore, i'm not sure where artists are supposed to go, because even the sites dedicated to sharing artwork don't have the longevity and community that tumblr does. just a bit disappointing is all.

life gets soooo much better when you aren’t surrounding yourself with people who actively spend their time in internet discourse circles and debate ultimately negligible topics

cornsnoot

“the X/Y/Z fandom is arguing about if it’s ok to-” i don’t care. come play with me outside in the mud puddles when you’re done

cornsnoot

i feel like using fandom as an example was a cop out on my part when this applies to MUCH more, particularly infighting between identities. in the real world people are too busy sucking each other nasty style to give a shit about tumblr and twitter arguments and that's how it should be

adventure time lore is insane. it starts off just being a goofy kids show that has magic for no reason, but then you learn that all magic users are manic and/or depressed (what betty calls sadness and madness). because it turns out magic is actually a cosmic force beyond mortal comprehension, that itself was learned from cosmic entities that predated the existence of time itself inside a sea of monsters. and "magic" really is just understanding more about the nature of the universe than most people. that, in a way, reality isnt "real" and understanding that allows you to mold it. and thats magic. but that drives you to insanity and/or apathy. and there are beings who hold significant cosmic importance who are more prone to magic. and the reason magic became prevalent on earth is because of a nuclear war a thousand years ago, which released the entity that represents the destruction of all life onto the world. and after a nuclear apocalypse this gave way to a new earth, where magic could thrive. but a lot of the beings we see arent even magical, theyre just mutants from what happened 1000 years ago. and humanity as we know it has been all but wiped out. but everything stays the same because cycles of war and violence continue. and it doesnt matter if its nukes or magic. everything stays the same, but still changes.

lmao tumblr letting their users choose whether or not they want their likes to be public but then pulling a twitter 2.0 and showing your likes on your followers’ dashboards and specially saying who liked the posts in their new update, without the users’ consent or a way to turn it off, is actually pretty insane.

like how many times to we — the users — have to tell them we don’t want tumblr to be like any other social media platforms and that tumblr’s being different than twitter, instagram, tiktok is actually what makes us stay on this silly little site.

respectfully @staff you’re driving your users away. stop trying to “fix” things that are good and don’t need to be fixed. we want tumblr to be tumblr. we don’t want the site to be twitter or instagram 2.0

still so fucking weird to go from real life, where a cis man being flamboyant/effeminate/camp is judged like 70+% by how he speaks and carries himself, to online queer communities, which often seem to have no concept of male gender non-conformity that doesn’t involve wearing a skirt

tyrannuspitch

i promise you, a man can be fem to the point of being in danger while wearing literally exactly the same thing as a hypermasculine guy. a boring basic black suit. a t shirt and jeans. a UNIFORM. gender conformity is not only about what you wear

unbidden-yidden

None of you have watched that heartbreaking scene in The Birdcage where Albert gives up wearing everything he likes to try and blend in for their son’s conservative prospective in-laws and is so awkward and uncomfortable that no one says much until finally he says, defeated, “I know what you’re thinking - dressed like this, I’m even more obvious, aren’t I?” and it shows.

unbidden-yidden

Here, have your queer heart broken:

This is what I’m talking about. This is still literally how it is in most places in the Midwest if you’re trying to “pass” for straight/cis/whatever.

netherworldpost

I cannot begin to describe how hard I cried when I saw this scene the first time and how confused my conservative family was as to why I was crying.

It’s so funny how literally the way a man holds his wrists is an indication of femininity but also people think it’s all about makeup and clothing. But we’re also at a point that if you have a suit that is any color other than black, dark grey, or navy, it’s flamboyant.

Men’s sartorial stylings are so rigidly controlled it’s painful. Tim Gunn here is at the very absolute bleeding edge of “acceptably masculine” here for most cishet men, just for some noticible stripes, patterns, and purple, and that’s before he even moves. This is how restricted it is.

image

But Trixie Mattel (out of drag here) wearing standard masculine garb is could still be deemed unacceptably feminine for body language alone.

flameraven

This is why we talk about “toxic masculinity” – the idea that any expression of emotion besides anger or even wearing colorful clothes is non-masculine and therefore restricted is horrifying. It sucks! Men should be allowed to express themselves outside of a tiny box of acceptable behavior, because they’re, y'know, people, and people have a wide range of expression in the way they like to look and move and act.

I honestly feel like it’s gotten worse over the last couple decades, too. If you look at men’s fashions from the 70s and even into the 80s, there’s a lot of style choices that look pretty cringe to us, but…. you also see a lot more color and pattern in suits than you do now. I’m not sure when this started to shift, or if it’s tied in to the increasing lack of color in all consumer products, but it sucks.
